Do you need a different string?
Yes. A standard high G string tuned down an octave would be far too slack. Buy a dedicated low G string, often wound, sized for your ukulele (concert or tenor are the most common).
Low G or high G?
High G gives the classic bright strum. Low G adds bass notes and suits fingerstyle and solo arrangements. Chord shapes stay the same either way. Back to the standard ukulele tuner.
Frequently asked questions
Is low G harder to play?
